A letter to readers...
"Words for the Wise" will be publishing less often, at least for for the time being.
Dear readers,
October 30 of this year marked the third anniversary of “Words for the Wise.”
When I launched this newsletter, I had three hopes for it: First, that it would attract a significant readership. Second, that I would be able to publish posts around once each week. And third, that while I would never make paying subscriptions mandatory, enough readers would decide to support the publication that it would not be a financial drain on me in terms of the time I put into it.
I believe that the first goal was met, and I greatly appreciate the many loyal readers who continue to follow my reporting and commentary. The second goal of regular publication, as you are well aware, has only been met for short stretches at a time. And the third goal, a sustainable, voluntary paid subscription list, has not worked out as I had hoped.
To those of you who have continued to take out paying subs despite the irregularity of publication, I am hugely grateful. But I can no longer ask you to do it.
For the foreseeable future, I will only be posting when I can, probably at most a couple of times each month. Those of you who have signed up for monthly paid subs might consider discontinuing those, although I hope you will continue to remain unpaid subscribers.
Those who have taken out a full yearly sub, especially anyone who has done so recently, should consider asking for a refund (I believe you can do this through Substack, but if that does not work, please contact me privately and I will arrange it for you.)
“Words for the Wise” is not going away, and it will appear as often as I can manage it under these new circumstances. My sincere gratitude to those who still find it of interest, and who have wanted to support it.
Best wishes,
Michael
I have just come across your newsletter. I hope you continue to write and that your circumstances provide you with the opportunity for more great newsletters. I've just read one article so far (about Max Allen!) and it was excellent. It must be challenging to market newsletters on Substack. I'm sorry you did not get the following (paid subscriptions) your writing justifies.
