In their new book, postdoc Alina Chan and science writer Matt Ridley provide the most detailed, fair, and yes, scientific account yet of the fierce debate over Covid-19's origins.
Excellent review… it expands my understanding a little bit, and it stimulates me to read the book to further broaden my meager knowledge about this unprecedented time. Thank you Michael.
Another excellent commentary, this time on the crucial topic of the origin(s) of COVID-19. It certainly makes a powerful case for reading the book "Viral" by Alina Chan and Matt Ridley.
What do you think of the RFK book? I have it but cannot bring myself to read it through because I know I will have innumerable and unanswerable questions, and I have looked in vain for a review by a qualified person (virologist, etc.). Of one thing I am certain: no government will ever admit responsibility (even if "accidental") for the pandemic. That said, it is as certain as it will ever be that it was a lab leak. By the way, I am here because I found your piece "Portraits of France" googling Francoise Kestsman. I spent an afternoon with Durrell in 1988 drinking Rheinhessen. Francoise was there, too. Do you know if she is still alive?
Thank you for this. The last I heard Francoise was still alive. I believe she sold the house in Sommieres long ago. I am still a member of the Lawrence Durrell Society which knows all these things so I can check.
PS—That story about Durrell and Francoise, originally published in the International Herald Tribune, is one of my favorites among all the pieces I have written in my career. Glad you saw it.

Thanks Eli! And please share this post with anyone you think might benefit from it.

Really like this. Have you read (not a scientist, but a national security insider) Jaime Metzl? https://jamiemetzl.com/origins-of-sars-cov-2/
